An environment assignment for school, where we were required to use either a photobash or a 3D model as the basis of the painting; I went back to an idea that I've wanted to do for about a year or two. Inspired in part by Magic: the Gathering's New Phyrexia, the Pyxis worlds from Clive Barker's Jericho, and the Hell depicted in Agony, I wanted to portray a world made naturally of flesh, without much intervention/construction. A large portion of the images used were of museum photos of bones and mummified bodies, as well as animal parts and cuts of meat, although there were a small portion of imagery from other, more aquatic sources.
One of the more difficult sections to find an image of was of individual ribs, and had to resort to creating a rib piece from a different piece of bone, shaved down to shape.
